The S.S. Badger is the last operational coal fired passenger steam ship operating in the United States. She is a “car” ferry built to haul rail cars across Lake Michigan in all seasons, yes even in winter. Each vessel of the fleet was an ice breaker as well.  Once a vital part of the industrial development of the USA, she now hauls passenger vehicles and commercial trucks as well as passengers. Three generations of Joe’s family have worked on these boats, so he feels a strong connection to these coal fired behemoths.
