“Desperation” a limited series
By Joe Clark, Photographer
“Desperation”, a limited photographic series.
Migrants braved the open water Atlantic upon this home built vessel to cross from Cuba or Haiti, depending on your source, to reach the United States. Local information indicates that upwards of 100 to 150 people crossed in this small craft into Marathon, Florida. Local information also indicates that the vessel was built in the short span of one night so that the occupants could make their escape. The flotation was provided by the limited displacement of a leaky hull and the dozen or so 55 gallon drums that were welded together and strapped and welded to the sheet metal frame. The level of desperation and ingenuity are perfectly demonstrated in the construction and the operation of this vessel. What would drive you to take yourself or your family such great distances on a vessel such as this? These are the questions that “Desperation” asks.
