The northern lights were forecasted to be strong on this particular night, but as many times before they failed to show when the sky darkened. Previously in the day they provided Russia one of the most dazzling shows of all time, we were not so lucky on our side of the globe. The moon stated cresting the tree tops and provided subtle illumination on the trees further to the south on the Bear River, their color is just barely visible in the photograph. Joe choose the Nikon D5 for this shot as an experiment to see how well this flagship camera would hold up to the traditional D850 he normally shoots with. The D5 did not disappoint, with its lower noise it is a great choice for night sky photography.
